The shank snaffle has long bars with a fixed ring for attaching the reins. This shape exerts more pressure on the horse's cheeks. This makes it easier for a horse to turn and the bit cannot be pulled through the mouth so easily. In addition, the bit lies quietly and stably in the mouth. The shank snaffle is an ideal bit for young or very hot horses that do not understand position and bending very well. The straight parts of the side piece are slightly bent outwards so that they cannot come into contact with the side of the horse's head. It is important that the bit is positioned in the mouth with the bars pointing outwards so that they cannot cause any wounds.
The locked mouthpiece
mouthpiece is similar to a single jointed mouthpiece, but cannot bend as much as a single jointed bit. When pressure is applied to the reins, the bit locks and becomes a straight bar, making it a sharper bit. If less pressure is applied to the reins, the bit changes back to a single jointed bit. This makes it an ideal bit for horses that push against the hand.
